Dolch Sight Words
Dolch words are high frequency English vocabulary commonly used words to teach young readers to learn vocabulary. Learning to recognize them automatically can facilitate fluency in reading. Dolch sight words are commonly found in written English.
The list was created by Edward William Dolch, a renowned educator and reading specialist, in the 1930s and 1940s. Dolch compiled a list of 220 words that he identified as “sight words,” meaning they should be recognized by sight rather than being said. These words are also known as “service words” or “instant words” because they are frequently used and should be recognized immediately by readers.

Edward William Dolch (1889-1962) was an American educator and reading specialist who is best known for his work in creating the “Dolch Sight Word List,” a list of the most commonly used words in the English language. Dolch began his career as a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse in Wisconsin and went on to become a professor of education at the University of Illinois.
In his work as an educator, Dolch recognized the importance of teaching reading fluency and comprehension to children.
Why Are Dolch Sight Words Important
Sight words are important because of their frequency of appearance when beginning to read. If these words are introduced and mastered by beginner readers, these kids will have a strong foundation for reading more difficult and expanded comprehension later on and will sharpen their vocabulary.
Although there are several sight word lists that vary in content, they all aim to divide the words into levels based on the frequency of use in early readers and share the same purpose, which is to help beginning readers meet reading success and build on this success to be proficient readers.

Dolch sight words for the Pre-Primer level are a set of high-frequency words that young children are taught to recognize on sight, without needing to decode them.
